The Search for Child Modeling Opportunities in Texas
by Megan Martin
Gabrielle and her parents are looking at one day making the move to California or New York to take advantage of the modeling opportunities that are currently not available in Texas. Gabrielle has been modeling for three years now, starting when she was two years old. Her mother Angel says Gabrielle is a “natural” and was “born to model”, and loves every minute of it.
Gabrielle has been taking ballet & tap dancing classes since age 3. She loves being on stage performing her dance routines. This year she will perform "Boogie Baby" and wear a blue sparkly-fringed costume. Though only five years old, Gabrielle has already won Halloween costume contests the last two years in a row, and has had a chance to meet and talk with Charlie’s Angels icon, Jaclyn Smith.
Gabrielle did her first modeling job for a clothing line called Jabari from Milan, Italy bringing happiness and excitement to her mom. She then did some modeling for a photographer convention a few months after that. And has appeared in a local Texas magazine ad for photographers. And a clothing boutique in Texas. This month Gabrielle just finished modeling projects for the Disney Corporation and Lyondell Chemical company.
Like many people, Gabrielle’s parents would hear others talk glowingly about Gabrielle whenever they went shopping or to any public place. After hearing many people comment about Gabrielle’s personality, her parents did a search on the Internet, first placing her in pageants as a baby. Despite winning her first pageant, Texas is not the best place for modeling. Thus it took some time to get that first job. Gabrielle’s parents still feel that Texas limits her opportunities. Her first payment for a job was a Toy’s R Us gift card, ironically for work found by the parents and not through an agency. For her just completed Disney assignment, Gabrielle was paid $85 an hour.
So what’s involved in a modeling session for Gabrielle? Counting travel time, they spend about four to five hours on a shoot. Each photographer usually photographs her for 2 to two and a half hours.
Parent’s advice? Take pictures of your child, pick out the best 3 and then do an Internet search or search in the phone book for agencies. Then mail them your child’s picture with contact information on the back of the photographs. “Let a child be a child”, says her mom. “Don’t expect your child to get every job they try out for”, added mom. With that philosophy in mind, mom calls the modeling experience both “enjoyable and exciting”.
In the meantime, pending the big move to California or New York, mom is working on updating Gabrielle’s pictures and actively hunting for more opportunities in Texas.

I too am in Texas and frustrated about the lack of opportunities for babies/kids in modeling etc. I cannot find any information on any Dallas agencies. Any suggestions .. how did you get your first 'bite' with regards to Gabrielle's modeling career?? |

Everyone seems to be in the same situation dont they? Its because were all biased and think our babies are the most beautiful people in the world. It would be nice if someone would ask for my child to model for them,I think it would make you feel honoured, wouldnt it? I hope no mother on here feels to gutted if there babies are not chosen to model in there lifetimes as they are all beautiful.Just be glad your eyes can see them everyday and feel sorry for the rest of the world. My little Amber will always be my star. |

I am also from Texas, and would like to get my daughter, and maybe even my son into modeling. I have an even bigger obstical, I am from a small town that is an hour and a half to any major city. My daughter will be one in August and is a poser. She loves taking pictures. My son likes all eyes on him. He has this energy that is intoxicating. I just wanted to say good luck to you, and also say, you are lucky to have your wonderful daughter. |

Such a cutie! Wish you guys luck. How about acting? Not too long ago I recieved an invitation to go into Houston with my daughters resume and audition for the Disney Channel. If you are interested, try to find a way to contact Disney. They were doing a tour of the US. Sorry I do not have any more information. My 15 year old decided against it because it would not have lasted too long for her. |
