The Excitement of Landing that First Job

Megan Martin

Kim Carey screamed with excitement the first time she set eyes on her baby’s first print advertisement. Five months later Carey still gets excited each time Kabryl’s agent calls for a go-see (audition) or a job.

Carey’s son, Kabryl, started modeling at the young age of 8 months old. “I thought my son was beautiful, happy and smiled for anything and everything”, said Carey, in explaining what made her give modeling a try for her baby.

The first thing Carey did was to send out her son’s photos to a lot of agencies. Carey persisted, trying some twenty to thirty agencies before one finally showed interest. Her advice to parents looking to get their baby’s into modeling? “Send out your kid’s best photos to every agency in town”, states Carey.

Carey’s son has done work for Parenting, Johnson & Johnson along with a Department of Health advertisement. But the road was not always easy. Kabryl got signed when he was eight months old, but it took three long months to finally land his first paying gig. He had many go-sees or auditions, but with so many beautiful children, Kabryl had to wait his turn. “Thus far it's been a beautiful experience even with him not getting all the jobs he's gone after. The fact that they considered him was great enough for us”, said Carey.

Carey went the agency route with Kabryl. But despite just having to wait for the phone to ring for a job opportunity or go-see, Kim says she has to spend a lot of time shuffling Kabryl from go-see to go-see at the drop of a dime. And as for the pay, rates can range from $25 an hour to hundreds of dollars an hour. But the most her son has had to work so far has been one hour.

Carey’s advice to moms when it comes to agents, “If you have to pay an agent to work for you then that is not the agency for you”. Agencies get paid commissions from the client and from you only if they land you a job. Carey has not had to pay the agency any money.

Carey has no regrets so far and would not have done anything differently. As for Kabryl, well he loves smiling for the camera and hearing his mom scream in excitement every time he gets a go-see. Kabryl is a Rate My Baby Pics member. You can view more photos at lilboyblue
