So I have been working hard on drawing out an "Education Schedule" for my children who are 3 and 4, almost 5. I usually send them to a academic based preschool, but I am not working, therefore can not afford the tuition. Anyway. I think that I am overdoing it, and I am wondering if anyone has made a preschool timeline to follow without overloading their children... which I believe is what I am about to do. My son has already had a year of preschool, but my daughter has had no schooling, but knows her ABCs and can count fairly well, she knows all her colors and shapes. I just don't want to spend an entire year teaching them to find out that I have done it all wrong and they have learned nothing. So please any advice or a curriculum that you have been made would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Sounds like she already is more then ready for P_K if she knows her colors and numbers and shapes! Good job Mom! I try to teach Joey without him knowing I am actually teaching! Just keep it fun. I think just playing with them you can inject a lot of teaching!
I just wouldnt push things on them.. My son will be 4 this sept. and he knew all his abc numbers and how to right his name around 2 1/2 3.. but that was only because i would just sing the abc and make games out of them.. and he loves blues clues so the writting part he got a lot from there..
yes there will be no "pushing" this on them, i just have a list of things that i want to go over with them... using games or whatever to help teach them. like not always out of a book. but i just needed a time line. my daughter has no interest in writing. we have worked on a few things and she just does not seem interested but she is proud when she gets them done! :-) now my son. he knew how to write his name also when he was like 2 1/2, so i know she could do it, but i also know that i haven't worked with her as much either...
Any New Ideas Today. Please. I won't be sending my kids to Preschool this year, and I start work again in November, so I really wanted to be ready for this.... Am I seriously freaking out over nothing or what??
Ithink they willbe fine.. But I inderstand where yourcoming from.. My middle child dose NOT want to learn her colors.. She is a little over 2 1/2 but just dose not care to learn them she can count and knows her abc's and mosther shapes but dosent care about colors!! SO I feel like I'm not doing something right.. but really I can only do so much.. Just make a game out of it.. I use M & M;s because its the onlything to keep her mind on what she is doing..
GOODLUCK!! ifyou come up with something that works good let meknow!! lol
If they are not ready, don't push them. I try to teach my daughter a lot, but i try not to push her. She knows her alphabet, counts, days of the week, she can identify all her letters an numbers. She's having trouble on the sounds, but it's ok, she's only 3. She knows months of the year. I even taught her some site words like fish, whale, lion, tree. If you can make a game out of it that they are interested in, then do it. Don't push cause then they will get frustrated. Before your little one goes to bed, say the days of the week or the months of the year and i guarantee she will learn them in about two days. Their minds are like sponges, and they pick up really quick. For the letters paste them on the floor and say were going to sit on this letter right now. You have to make up games to keep them interested.
...and for the colors you when you dress them in the morning try to ask what color they want to wear to day and ask do you want to wear this green shirt or these pink shirts. Or say mommy is going to wear this color shirt. If they know how to use the computer, put them starfall.com for like 30 minutes a day, and they will learn.
You know what is funny, when my daughter meets strangers she refers to them by the color of their shirts, or skirts. She loves skirts so she always goes with that if they were wearing one!
I was going to say I know a lot of people that use M&Ms for learning the colors.
You guys all have great ideas! Thank you! I just wanted to make a formal setting because I feel bad that Hailey won't get to go to the school that Kason went to. It was soo cute and she was looking forward to it. Sometimes I couldn't get her to leave with me because she wanted to stay, and I would tell her, "when you get bigger", or "next year is your turn". So I really wanted her to feel like she was in a school. ya know??
I went to schoolzone.com and ordered some things recently and I have a hooked on phonics program, (which i have had for like two years now, I just have not motivated myself enough to go through with all of it), but I wanted to incorporate those things also. Like I don't expect them to read this year, I was just going to use it.
Also any suggestions on how I can seperate them without seperating them. I mean I feel that sometimes Hailey waits for Kason to answer, then she copies him. I mean she is prob still learning but I want her to be confident in herself also.
hi! I am a fulltime housewife... i am a graduate of Bachelor in Secondary Education, but didn't practice my degree since i am into business before i gave birth to my son... since my boy is already in pre-school i am planning to have my own business.... i want to open a daycare center for a start, which includes playing and learning. now the problem goes since i don't have any ideas to administer it. since the methods of teaching i have taken is for highschool. can anybody help me? if you have any ideas please email me @ switlipzz@yahoo.com.your ideas will be very much appreciated..
Ok here are my suggestions. These are the things my son knew going into kindy
Counts to a 100 and can count in 5's and 10's He could write all his letters upper case and lower case He could also write his numbers Recogonize all his letters and numbers Knew his phone number and address He knew all of his letter sounds (this is a biggy) when they did he kindy screening this is one of the things they tested him on. He could draw his shapes (circle, triangle, square, trapezoid and a rhombus) He could tie his shoes
The things you mentioned my son knew before he even went into preschool they were taught in the first year. Like my daughter is 3 and she is learning the colors and how to mix colors to make other colors.
If you are setting up a home curriculum here is what I would do. Get him envolved in everything you do at home. If your cooking bring in the step stool and show him everything you do. My son loves to stir things, and measure things out etc.. You can teach so much when cooking.
Teach him independance from setting the table to pouring his own drink. Independace is so important because when they go to kindy no one is there to hold there hand any longer.
There are some great learning books with work sheets in them. I buy mine at costco like 10-15 dollars.
Read every single day. And when you read read the title and the author and the illustrators name. Point to the words as well. It shows the kid the words on the page and that they mean something. I do this everyday and my 5 year old is reading at a first grade level now.
And because he knows his letter sounds now he is also able to spell simple words.
At 4 and 5 years old I don't think you can overload a child. this is the start of there prime learning ages. But if its a constant sit down setting it will be to much. They can learn anywhere and everywhere they go. I taught my son his phone number while driving in the car. He knows what the shape of an octagon is because of the stop sign. I do a lot of teaching while in the car.
My 3 and 5 year old can never seem to learn enough.
i used to teach pre k and also i had a 3 year old room. I'm actaully thinking of going back to teaching pre k and taking michael with me. i used to set up a chart each week. I would have a theme, and a letter for the week(given by the school). all week i would just design things around those themes, but each day i did a project, a letter practice anda story. that would take up 9:30- 11 slot. that's all they need really. the rest can be hands on learning in the world. That's what i do with my son. we go on adventures to the lake and the park. we stop and look at things on the ground, plus in the city, he loves learning about all the traffic and the lights. Plus it's fun for him. Anyways, if you want to try and keep up with a type of curriculum, just hav ea letter of the week and a theme such as pumpkins this week since it's fall, or leaves next week, apples, etc. then just do stuff all week that involves them. You can do a project each day or if you can't think of a project to do, just print out coloring sheets. Also your 4 and 5 year old probably love to cut, so trace a lot of things for them to cut out. This is a great skillfor them to accomplish! It involves fine motor skills and lots of concentration. You can also look up songs and games to teach them with their hands. Also try doing a circle time in the morning. Make up a poster board for them to take turns posting the date, the weather, and the season. i hope these ideas help a little =)
